When I heard that Pete had left I wasn't looking forward to the gig at all. But from the moment they opened with a brilliantly frantic Horrorshow I was hooked. I've never seen 'em before, or seen live appearances on TV, so didn't really know what to expect and can't say how much they missed Pete, but they were bloody good! The energy level was incredible and I was thinking after the third song 'How can they keep this up', but they did - quality song afer quality song. The fact is that they've got a catalogue of brilliant songs and even the slightly weaker stuff (Boy Looked at Johnny?) works well live (at breakneck speed and LOUD).
Before now I've never really understood comparisons with the Clash, but last night that's who they reminded me of. I'm not young, I saw the Clash in 78 (I think), before the second album came out and they were untouchable. It'll always be my best gig - I was 17, punk was still alive, the Clash were pure energy on stage and I look back through rose-coloured glasses!
But last night was as close as it gets. Fantastic songs and fantastic live band. If you haven't seen 'em yet, make an effort while they're still around (whatever the line-up).
One thing - is it a compliment to chuck half-full beer cans at the band? Thought not - still the same dickheads at gigs as there always were.

Yeah the gig was amazing. I too thought they would struggle without pete, but all the songs were superb, i thought the performance of death on the stairs was brilliant. It was pretty frantic down the front, really looking forward to seeing them at glasto now too.

Glad you enjoyed it! Even without Pete, they were still fantastic, the sound in that venue is amazing, it made every song sound like a brilliant anthem (which they undoubtedly are, I've just never seen them play a venue big enough to give them that kind of sound, if that makes sense).
The thing about The Libertines is that all their shows are that energetic, only more so when Pete is with them - Pete is just amazing onstage, completely wired and the chemistry between him and Carl is fantastic - they literally bounce off each other - one of the things that makes them so exciting!
It was strange without Pete, but I thought they did superbly, and as I say, the sound was amazing - the crowd, despite as you say being populated by a fair amount of dickheads, was fantastic too - I was just to the left of the stage, just back from the main moshing / general shoving / dancing bit, but near enough to go mad without getting killed... very sweaty and fantastically good! Highlights for me:
Death On The Stairs (if there was one song that became an anthem, this was it) Don't Look Back Into The Sun The Good Old Days Begging
Oh, and Carl introducing Up The Bracket as "this one's called 'Where's Pete?'" - heh!
Anyone else...?

Went to the Glasgow gig last night. Seems like exact same as the Manchester scenario. I havent seem them with Pete in the line-up but they were great last night. I wonder how Carl kept going at that SPEED, just cant work it out...

The gig was brilliant, the only thing that spoiled it were a few in the crowd who spent the whole gig shouting for pete and throwing beers at the band.
Everyone knew pete wasnt going to be there, but the majority just wanted to have a good time anyway, not spend the whole gig shouting for pete, which is a waste of time and its not fair on carl john gary and that nick bloke, who i thought put everything into the performance, both in manchester and new brighton. I heard one guy say 'no ones even noticed' referring to lack of pete, which pissed me off, obviously he hadnt thought that they wanted to enjoy the gig with or without pete.
Enough complaining then, the gig was top quality stuff and carl sung all the songs really well, and i thought some of the songs sounded noticably different with his vocs. I was in the middle of the general shoving bit and i came out of the gig with a soaking wet tshirt and several bruises but all worth it.

Manchester was great considering the circumstances, although like Tim said it lacked the chemisty. Highlights: Mayday, Carl's where's Pete joke, the Delaney, Boys in the Band. Was great to dance to the three Libs tracks they played at 42nd after too.
Pretty much the same thing at New Brighton with slightly less chants. Both were better than I thought they'd be without Pete and it seems like people who were seeing them for the first time enjoyed themselves. Horrorshow just wasn't them same without Pete's manic gittering though. Liked the way Carl changed the Good Old Days (the Pigman's lost the source). Was absolutely knackered by the time I got back on Sunday but all in all it was an amazing weekend.

Cool, whereabouts on the dancefloor were you at 42s? There was a big group of libs fans in the middle of the floor and i was quite near them more or less hanging off the wall, i think i kept trying a libs fan's cool trilby on as well

I thought New Brighton was both amazing and heartbreaking.... I feel so proud of the way the band are coping without Pete and Nick is doing a superb job. The crowd were awful in Liverpool I thought, far too many idiots shouting without thinking, don't they realise how hard this must be for them???
They really surpassed themselves in Glasgow, they played their hearts out, and I was just stunned. I really do feel proud to be a Libertines fan, and thankfully the crowd were a lot less hard going in Glasgow, I was worried there would be more people shouting abuse than the previous night, but I was wrong.
Just read Chrissies post on .org. Glad to hear Peters taking some positive steps, good luck to him. As much as I'd love to see them, its really for the best that they're putting things on hold and have pulled Reading and Leeds.
See you at Glastonbury.

Ha, erm, was she wearing a pink top? The only one of my friends who has vaguely blonde hair was wearing a pink top, I'm not sure she'd have been doing the chatting up though! Holly - I quite agree, I feel really proud to be a Libertines fan, I think Nick has done a superb job, and Carl (and the rest of the band) played his heart out in Manchester the other night, as I've heard he has at every other gig and I'm sure he will again tonight (can't wait!). I think maybe we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that not everyone at these gigs is going to know what's been going on with Pete though, after all only a relatively small number of people read the forums and the NME, and even their website, have been quite a bit behind on this stuff... and of course there's the people who've only turned up to hear 'What A Waster'... I agree in the main though, there's no point whatsoever in shouting 'Where's Pete?' all through the gig, it's not going to change anything and it doesn't help or show any respect for the others... So it was ok in Glasgow then was it? I was talking to someone on the net the other day who said the crowd got a bit restless, and there was a few people booing when they came back on for the encore, for some reason and a few fights broke out or something...? Or maybe that's just as standard for the Barrowlands!

One of my mates went to 42nd and said everyone was talking about pete and the libertines, i heard it was good. Hope evryone enjoys the forum gig and glastonbury, ill be going t in the park, looking forward to the darkness, the stands (again), kings of leon but especially the rapture and the futureheads, i would reccomend these two to anyone, Are they playing glastonbury?
It seems according to this weeks NME that they finished recording dont look back into the sun, i wonder if the record co. will release it to play down the rumours of a split?

There wasnt any hassle in Glasow from what I could see.
Us Scots are a passionate people and if we are unhappy about something we will soon let you know. That just didnt happen with The Libertines, so its all good.
I was a bit disappointed with the turn out, I am used to seeing bands there playing to sell-out crowds.
They were excellent though, no complaints.

The Futureheads and The Rapture were both playing Glastonbury, yeah, I think The Futureheads are playing most of the festivals this year, so hopefully you should catch them at T in the Park... did you see they have a new single out soon, 'First Day'? I think it's the end of this month, and one of the b-sides is called 'Piece Of Crap', fantastic!! The lyrics are on the fansite too, such a great song already...
You might have a point about Don't Look Back Into The Sun - it was supposed to be out around July / August time anyway though wasn't it, so maybe they'll release it and then DENY they've put it out for that very reason... it's such a great record though, incredibly infectious, they never fail to amaze me... from what I've read, Pete releasing Babyshambles sometime might not be far off...
